Multiple Headset Bluetooth Dongle

According to Sennheiser, it is not possible to send from bluetooth dongle to multiple bluetooth headsets with any of the their dongles.  I have also been warned there may be a lag in sound if watching TV via a dongle - in may case that did not materialise.  After spending hours searching the internet for a provider of bluetooth dongles that does indeed support multiple headsets, or at least TWO headsets, I gave up.  The only solution is to buy two dongles and connect them with splitter!  Now, my wife and I are able to listen to music, but more importantly watch movies, through two of my favourite MM 550 bluetooth headsets.  This is a rather crude solution, and definitely not a cheap one if you are using sennheisers BTD 300 dongles. Now the question is why would anyone spend 800 Euros for bluetooth sound system for two?  The answer is simple, this is the best system out there for anyone with babies or kids and who cannot afford to crank up on the sound on the tv, whether at home or on holidays, without getting a screaming baby killing the whole evening >).  So yes, its expensive, but for any young parent this can be life saver!  Having looked into other wireless solutions (Kleer, radio, infrared) I decided this is the best solution, because after all if you are buying high quality headphones you want to be able to use them yourself with your iphone or computer.  If you chose any other technology, you end up have to two buy to headsets for everyone - now that becomes a bit too pricey for me :)  Any questions - let us know.

Sennheiser MM 550 versus Bose QC15 Headphones

Recently I made a big step - I decided to sell my bose headphones and buy a top of range set by Sennheiser, both noise cancelling. The reasons for the decisions are a long story, but in short, it was the wireless bluetooth feature they offer.  Now that I still own both, here is a comparison, not from a audiophile, but a simple user and lover of gadgets!   Sennheiser MM 550 Headphones: Pros + superb sound quality, beats the bose hands down + bluetooth is great and works up to 10m + works with a cable with dead batteries (a huge issue with my bose) + controls iphone/ipod via bluetooth - very sweet + cool talk-thru feature where you do not have to take them off to speak to someone + built in microphone for phone calls over bluetooh (okay you look stupid, but its fun!)   Cons - a bit hard on the ears, especially for those with glasses (I guess thats reasons Bose's QC3 on-hear exist :) - too many buttons to press for 3secs or 5 secs. A simple sliding button would be great for on/off. - very poor looking case for a expensive set of headphones   Bose Quiet Comfort 15 Headphones: Pros + Noise cancelling is more "feelable" on the Bose versus Sennheiser and somehow more satisfying. With the Sennheiser you sometimes are not sure if they are on or not! + they are very comfortable to wear, even with glasses on + AA batteries power is great for travelling and those not good at charging units   Cons - Batteries a must, cable a must - lack the wireless features - Sound quality is not there. I actually remember that from the first day I put them on - I was expecting a wow effect, but I only got that from the noise cancelling, not the music.   Conclusions:  Both are great headphones for those travelling a lot.  If you want a simple plug and play noise cancelling solution, the Bose will be great.  If you want sounds quality there is not deciding, simply go for the Sennheiser.  The Bluetooth feature is the reason I got them, its fantastic to run around at home/work without pulling your ipod onto the floor when you pick up a print out!  Sennheiser get a few softer cushions and a "normal" on/off switch and we wont be writing any comparisons, because they will be simply in a class of its own!

Petzl Head Lamp

Ever since I was kind a kid, I can remember I was never disappointed with a torch as a gift. Whatever shape or form it was always a great gift. The pictured petzl head lamp is a simple one strength version and its all one needs. Its great for camping and whether the lights go out and you want to read (a real book not your kindle though I am sure it works with a kindle too :). I have had this lamp for over 7 years, so definitely does not win any novelty awards, but it still good for its purpose. Not sure about prices, but should be around 20 GBP / 20 EUR. I would recommend, the simplest and battery operated version. A great gift for any gadget friend.

Amazon Fields Questions on E-Book Price Wars and Kindle Growth

E-mail

Amazon reported third-quarter earnings of $199 million, up 68% from the year-ago period, and said its Kindle e-reader was its top-selling item.

Associated Press
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos poses with a Kindle.

The online retailer’s net sales rose 28% to $5.45 billion. Electronics and other general merchandise were up 44% to $2.36 billion, while media sales grew 17% to $2.93 billion.

Amazon said it sees fourth-quarter net sales of $8.13 billion to $9.13 billion, and operating income of $300 million to $425 million, not including shoe retailer Zappos, which it bought last quarter.

Highlights from the call:

4:44 p.m. EST: Ahead of the call, Citi’s Mark Mahaney backs a “buy” rating, writing “AMZN should be extremely well prepared for Q4 — facing shrinking/destocking offline retail competitors, with THE must-have eReader and a significantly strengthening presence.”

4:56: On Seeking Alpha, a commenter points out that until recently there was much less competition for the Kindle, while this quarter Amazon faces Barnes & Noble’s new Nook as well as a burgeoning price war on e-books with Wal-Mart.

5:04: Tom Szkutak, Amazon’s CFO, will be leading the call.

5:07: On operating expenses, fulfillment was $444 million, marketing $144 million.

5:14: “We remain heads-down focused on driving a better customer experience,” Szkutak says.

5:16: Inventory increased, as it has in previous Q3s as it gets ready for Q4, he says. Justin Post from Merrill Lynch hints in his question at e-books competition, but Szkutak says, “Certainly it is very competitive…we have many different competitors.”

5:19: He also passes on a question about whether Amazon would consider opening up the Kindle given increasing competition. “Not a lot I can add to that,” he says.

5:24: “We like what we saw in Q3,” Szkutak says. December is “by far” Amazon’s largest month, but Q4 has some uncertainty, which is reflected in the wide range in the outlook.

5:26: Rob Eldridge, Amazon’s VP of investor relations, says that company is “still very happy” with Amazon Prime world-wide. Prime customers tend to visit the site more, shop different sections of the site more often.

5:30: He declines to break out performance of different components of Amazon’s Web services, but says there’s lots of demand around EC2. Encouraged by the response to AWS.

5:32: “You should expect to see that we will launch new geographies over time,” Szkutak says, in response to a question on international expansion plans. Prime helping there too.

5:34: Cowen’s Jim Friedland asks about foreign-language hurdles as Kindle goes into international markets. Our long-term vision is to have every title, every language, available in less than 60 seconds, Szkutak says.

5:35: Videogame sales were particularly weak last quarter, but within media, we did see an acceleration in all the key categories from Q2 to Q3, Szkutak says. But not discussing it in detail this time.

5:37: The company is “very optimistic” about Web services, he adds.

5:40: Will it be necessary to significantly increase staffing for the holidays, asks Sanford Bernstein’s Jeffrey Lindsay. Every year we supplement our teams with additional staffing, and this year will be no different, Szkutak says.

5:41: “We think China’s a great long-term opportunity,” he says.

5:43: Szkutak says there’s no breakout on growth rates or margins of the book category, so it’s hard to say how pricing changes will affect them. But know that most of our categories operate in competitive environments, he says.

5:47: Call ends.
